More than just a workout, Nia is a holistic fitness practice that tones the body and trains the brain to utilize mindfulness to find joy in every moment.
Students leave class feeling physically energized, emotionally connected, and mentally clear. Nia is based on the intelligent design of the body; each student is encouraged to find his/her own body’s way by sensing for pleasure in guided movement.
Nia is non-impact, practiced barefoot, and adaptable to individual needs and abilities. No prior experience is necessary.
Joy Leon has been fascinated with developing somatic skill for as long as she can remember. After being exposed to Catwoman at a young age, she fell in love with the archetype of the sexy, empowered female superhero. At five years old, she asked her mom to bring her to dance classes so that she could begin working on the skills that would allow her to join the ranks of Catwoman, Wonder Woman and Xena: Warrior Princess. The desire to be impressive, heroic and unapologetically female continues to influence Joy’s personality to this day.
Although she didn’t actually end up taking dance lessons as a child, dance has nonetheless always been there for her, providing a common thread between significant moments and proving to be a reliable, versatile friend. For Joy, dance has been a teacher, liberator, healer, emotional outlet, and avenue for creative expression. Joy’s path to become the best movement teacher she can be has led her to create a life that is more abundant, joyful and empowering than she had ever imagined possible as a youngster.
Joy is a certified Nia White Belt and Nia Green Belt instructor. She also holds a business degree from American University. She feels deep gratitude to the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies, where she worked on seasonal staff for four years and was able to learn, explore and share her passions in community. Other interests include permaculture, writing and cooking. Joy is excited to share the medicine of movement with everyBODY who is willing to step in and play.
